Bunion surgery is a corrective operation in which the foot’s big toe joint is placed back in its normal position or, in some cases, portions of it are removed, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. It can be painful, costly and lead to infection in some patients.
As a result, it may be a good idea to explore the ways in which bunion surgery can be avoided.
The New York City ABC affiliate recently reported that individuals should try wearing bunion splints at night. The devices hold the joint of the big toe in a correct position, keeping it stable while the user sleeps.
The foot doctor explained that supporting the mid-foot may keep the metatarsal bone from moving.
For added comfort, Blitz said individuals may want to consider padding their bunions. This may also prevent bursitis, or an infection of a fluid sac that tends to develop over bunions.
