Bunion surgery is known to be painful and potentially lead to recurrence, infection or over-correction (which is not pretty). As such, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends the operation only for individuals who experience severe pain or mobility limitations because of their bunions.
So, one can imagine the discomfort that Village Voice writer Michael Musto must have been having from the bunions on both of his feet. Apparently, it was so bad that double bunion surgery was necessary.
“If I’d kept going with those barfy bunions, I’d be forced to continue wearing all sorts of Kmart slippers, galoshes, and so on, with various plastic bags and pillowcases for extra layering – a real mess,” Musto wrote on the news source’s blog.
He called his bunions “the biggest nightmare I’d ever experienced below my knees.” The writer says he’ll be on the mend for about a week from his bunion surgery.
Musto and others who undergo painful bunion surgery may want to consider using bunion splints or orthotics to promote proper healing of the toe joint.
