Post bunion surgery infections costing US healthcare system big
Bunion Advice

Individuals who are thinking about getting bunion surgery to get rid of prominent deformities of the big toe joint have many things to consider before going under the knife. For instance, the cost and risk factors, which include infection and over-correction, may be prohibitive for some people.

Moreover, in certain cases, risks can turn into extra costs when they require additional care or hospitalization. In order to gauge the problem, researchers from the Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State University calculated the cost of infection of the surgical site following hip or knee replacement.

They found that complications stemming from infection after hip or knee replacement surgery add up to about $65 million each year in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that out of every 100 surgery patients, one to three develop a subsequent infection.

Results of this study suggest that conservative treatments should be tried before individuals resort to surgery. In the case of foot problems like bunions or hammer toe, that may mean using orthotics and bunion splints regularly.
